Born to Die by Lana Del Rey Review

Updated: Jun 1, 2022

Miss Lana is very important to me so I'm just telling you now that this album will score well. Warning you I'm biased. This album is very important, but I'm going to revisit it to score each song appropriately. Also, this is the deluxe version, but does not include the paradise edition songs. That will be another post.

Born to Die: What an opener. This song is so beautiful. This song will always be special to me because when I was in Chicago by the ferris wheel it played at night while it was lightly raining and it was such a magical moment. That was the closest I’ve ever been to heaven.

Off to the Races: Wow. I love this song so much. It is so cinematic. The violins at the end are so beautiful. And her voice is so powerful in this song. I love how often she switches up the lyrics in the chorus. Listening to this song is a trip.

Blue Jeans: This is such a classic. I remember the first time I heard it it was for a commercial for the show Scandal. And I was like “damn this song is good.” Turns out it was Lana and that’s how I got into her music. I love the lyrics in this song. And the chorus is just so goddamn amazing.

Video Games: Another classic Lana song. This one is pretty different from the first three tracks. It’s very simple. But I think that’s what makes it so perfect. It’s a love song, but it makes you want to cry. I think it’s just how she sings it.

Diet Mountain Dew: This is a fun song. It’s not my favorite because it’s too repetitive and she doesn’t flex her voice a lot. Still, I like it.

National Anthem: This song would be so much better if it had a different chorus. The chorus is kind of underwhelming and I don’t like how she sings it. Overall, I think it’s a good song because the verses go hard. And the music video is so iconic, I could never hate the song.

Dark Paradise: This song is sad, but it doesn’t sound sad enough to match the lyrics. The tune of the verses aren’t my favorite. I think the song is a bit boring. As you get into it, though, it definitely gets better. She gets a little more flow and you find yourself getting caught up in the lyrics.

Radio: This song is fantastic. It’s such a happy sounding song. The chorus is so catchy. And I love how contradicting it is. She’s singing about being on the radio, and for the most part the song sounds like it could be on the radio. But then she just drops the f bomb in the chorus. I think it’s so perfect.

Carmen: This is such a good song about a teenage prostitute. The best part of this song is the lyrics. They’re heartbreaking, but the sound of the song is almost empowering. Like Carmen has so much power, but her life is so tragic. It’s a masterpiece.

Million Dollar Man: If the lyrics weren’t so depressing this would be a great slow dance song. Unfortunately, the man she’s singing about isn’t a good man, so it kind of ruins the romantic sound of this song. Her voice is so powerful in this song. I swear, it takes you back in time.

Summertime Sadness: The radio remix of this song was so shippy. This song is so beautiful, so emotional, it didn’t need a fumping dance track behind it. This song is a song I could die to. It has such an amazing vibe to it.

This Is What Makes Us Girls: The lyrics in this song are better than the actual song. The chorus is underwhelming. There’s nothing too special about this song. The story is just really interesting.

Without You: This song should not be a bonus track. I think it fits better in the album than TIWMUG does. The chorus of this song makes me fall in love with it.

Lolita: This song is pretty different. But it’s super fun and I absolutely love the bridge. I want to see this song live so bad so I can sing along to that part.

Lucky Ones: This song is really beautiful. I love the lyrics. It’s a little refreshing because she seems actually happy. Almost.

This Is What Makes Us Girls

So yeah, I really like this album. It's kind of been it since 2011. It earned a score of 8.5/10, mainly because I'm not a huge fan of National Anthem or This Is What Makes Us Girls. Most songs off of this go hard. She really popped off and I'm sorry for saying that. Bye
